2002 - 2003: Mapping Minds, Changing Maps: Comparative analysis of the role of universities in societies undergoing change
The goals of the project are to conduct research focusing on universities in Ljubljana, Warsaw, Budapest, Lahore and New Delhi; explore links between ideas and institutions by analyzing dominant ideas in academic circles in Central European countries and reforms in those societies, compare the roles of Pakistani and Indian academic elites in shaping respective national identities and respective relations between academic and political elites; analyze the role of CEU in shaping ideas regarding national identities in CEE countires; interview some one hundred people with past or present affiliations with these universities as students or academicians; and write a research and policy paper for the Role of Universities in Social Transition research project, academics and government officials responsible for higher education policy.
