8.   TEACHING

(a)  Areas of Special Interest and Accomplishments

My teaching focus and accomplishments have been on the integration of gender analysis and feminist perspectives in interdisciplinary fields such as planning, international development studies, and political science, and the development of women’s studies programs and gender-focused courses. My special areas of teaching interests are linked to my research specialization: gender and international development, politics of women’s movement and community organizing, participatory action research and development planning, and gender and globalization studies.

Since coming to UBC, I have developed and taught three new courses: PLAN 548M (Gender and International Development Planning), PLAN 548H (Participatory Planning Methods and Tools) and WMST 425P (Women, Gender and International Politics). I have also developed two new courses: WMST 405 (Gender Issues in Community and International Organizing) for Women’s Studies Program, and a proposed WMST/AG/PLAN/GEOG course on Gender, Environment and Natural Resource Management for the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. In January-April 2001, I will teach a core course WMST 422 (Advanced Feminist Research Methods Seminar) for women’s studies majors. The special topics course PLAN 548H I developed for SCARP has attracted students from M.A./MSc. Planning, M. Adult Education, M. Asian Policy Studies programmes, including five from Simon Fraser University (SFU) who had not been able to enroll because of the limited number of seats.

In my several years of teaching at various institutions, I have contributed to the development of new courses and programs that integrate gender analysis, women’s perspectives, and feminist literature. At the University of the Philippines, De La Salle University and St. Scholastica’s College, I helped pioneer the development of their respective women’s studies programmes as early as 1985. At the University of Regina, I developed two new courses: Political Science 337 (Women and Politics) and Political Science 490/890 ( Feminist Perspectives in Comparative Politics) which attracted a number of graduate students from sociology, political science and social work.

At the University of Saskatchewan, I also introduced two new courses -- Political Studies 346.3 (Gender and Globalization) and Political Studies 346.3 (Comparative Politics of Southeast Asia), along with my revisions of the existing course, International Studies 200.6 (Introduction to International Studies), where I introduce interdisciplinary perspectives within international political economy, international relations, and international development, including gender, ethnicity, race and culture.

9.   SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

(a)  Areas of Special Interest and Accomplishments

My continuing research interests are on gender and international development planning, gender and globalization, organizational change within non-government and international development agencies, politics of feminism and women’s movements, and comparative Southeast Asian political economy. My current research projects are on gender and globalization; women, bureaucracy, and poverty alleviation programs in the Philippines and Vietnam; social safety nets in Southeast Asia; women and structural adjustment programs in the Philippines; gender analysis and participatory development methods in localized poverty reduction; and comparative state feminism in Southeast Asia.

I have experience in policy analysis, capacity-building projects, training, and consulting work  for international, regional, and national government and non-government organizations.

My 1989 study, “The Quest for Justice: Obstacles to the Redress of Human Rights Violations in the Philippines” was submitted to various levels of the Philippine government, including the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Congress and Senate Committee on Human Rights, Department of Justice, Commission on Human Rights, and Civil-Military Relations Unit of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and assisted in some legislative and policy reforms.

My M.A. thesis on “Feminism and Nationalism: The Discourse on the Woman Question and Politics of the Women’s Movement in the Philippines” is considered a landmark study on the politics and social history of the Philippine women’s movement from early 1900s up to 1987.
