APPENDIX 4

The answers of the 10 questions, which are most relevant to the cultural attitudes of the respondents, have been compared in the following way. The distribution (in %) of all kinds of answers of each of the three major ethnic groups has been compared with the distribution of the answers of the other two; analogically have been compared the distributions of the answers of the children from the two major religions and also of the six schools, where the survey was made.

The maximum and the minimum of the answers to each question among the three ethnicities, resp. among the two religions and among the six schools have been highlighted. The discrepancy between the maximum and minimum in each of the three categories of answers are – according to the methodology of the survey – considered as indicative of the cultural differences among the students, belonging to different, resp. ethnicities, religious communities and schools. E.g. the discrepancy between the % of the Bulgarian children, who answer that they go to school because their parents send them, and the % of the Roma children, who give the same answer, is indicative of the level of cultural difference in this respect among the students, belonging to different ethnicities. The fact that the discrepancy between the 44.3 % of the Sliven minority (ghetto) school and the 13.7 % of the Shumen mixed school is much greater than the discrepancy between the 38.1 % of the Roma and the 19 % of the Bulgarian students (let alone the difference between 29.5 % for the Christian children and the 24.1 % for the Moslems) is interpreted as an evidence that the cultural difference in the motivation to go to school is greater between these two schools, than between the Roma and the Bulgarian children, or between the religious categories of students. From this follows that the pedagogical intervention to improve this motivation should conform to a much greater variability in this respect among the concrete schools, than among the ethnic or religious categories of students. This means that a generalizing approach, adapted to the needs of e.g. the Roma students in general, would not be adequate at many of the schools where Roma children study. In other words, an individualizing approach, using a diagnostical instrument for every concrete group of students, has better chances to select methods of intercultural education, that are most adequate for the respective situation.
