Nordic-Baltic campaign against
trafficking in women
Activities in Estonia
The Estonian campaign will include a mapping of the situation re: trafficking
in women in Estonia, and people’s attitudes to the problem. Research will
be done among police, border guards, and high school students; awareness
and attitudes will be investigated. The main activities include awareness
rising among teachers, youth workers, and job counsellors around Estonia
through training courses. Educational evenings will be hold all around Estonia.
Information leaflet on trafficking will be compiled, printed and disseminated
in schools, universities, au pair and employment agencies, youth organisations,
etc. The co-ordination team will collaborate with NGOs and other interested
party. Research will be done during spring; educational activities will take
place in autumn 2002.
Mapping the situation in Estonia
Research on state’s ability to stop and prevent trafficking in women.
Research on female high school students to find out awareness on trafficking
and prostitution, and attitudes.
Educational meetings around Estonia
Target groups are parents, local police, social workers, local municipality
leaders, representatives of women’s roundtables, teachers of social sciences
and class leaders, representatives from student organisations, Red Cross,
Family Planning Association, counselling centres for youth. The aim is
to introduce the concept of trafficking in women, its reasons and consequences,
also, how to prevent trafficking and what to do, if this happens to someone.
Attitudes towards victims, and most important, community’s role in prevention
will be discussed. In addition information leaflets about trafficking will
be disseminated.
Training courses on trafficking in women
Target groups are high school teachers/ youth workers/ hobby circle teachers/job
counsellors around Estonia. The aim is to introduce the concept of trafficking
in women, its reasons and consequences, risk groups to people, who work
with youngsters every day. Methods will be given how to introduce this topic
to students and youth in general in classes, hobby circles and career interviews.
Educational institutions’ role in prevention will be emphasised.
Trafficking information day in Youth Workshop Living for Tomorrow
The project is about gender issues, sexual health awareness and safety,
HIV/AIDS, STD information, and includes information about trafficking and
prostitution, that are strongly connected to above-mentioned issues. Target
group is young people age 14-18 from schools, both Estonians and Russians.
The aim is to implement, adapt and expand work with Estonian youth on gender
identity, sexual behaviour and health, using a workshop methodology that
has proven to be highly effective in encouraging critical thinking, social
initiative and interaction across the Russian-Estonian ethnic divide.
