The www.policy.hu web site is provided as a service to the Fellows and staff of the International Policy Fellowships program. The Internet services provided here (including: e-mail accounts, SSH/Telnet access, and Web space) are intended as long-term services that support fellows during their fellowship period and for the foreseeable future.

For the time being, there are no file or directory size limitations on your accounts and you are welcome to use them for any appropriate personal, educational or professional purposes so long as these are of a non-commercial nature. However, users should keep their file storage within reasonable limits and consult with the IPF staff for any exceptional needs.

We reserve the right to modify this usage policy at any time in the future if deemed necessary by the IPF program or those responsible for maintaining the server.

Passwords

  • All users are issued a password with their Policy.hu account access information.
  • Users should change their password the first time they enter the system.
(see the PuTTY page for a detailed explanation on How to Change your Password)
  • Passwords must be from 6 to 8 characters long, and cannot be a dictionary word
  • Do not choose an obvious password (i.e. your name or birthdate), include some numbers or punctuation (- , ! ; etc.), and change it periodically
  • Users should keep their passwords confidential and never share them with anybody or write them down in any obvious place. Doing so can place the whole system at risk.

Security
In designing the security features of a computer system, there is always a balance between high security and ease of access for users. This site is primarily intended to facilitate the public distribution of information, Therefore, while we believe that we have taken reasonable precautions to maintain the security of this server, we have chosen not to impose additional measures that would complicate access for the user.
You can generally expect that your personal files will be backed up periodically and will remain private. NEVERTHELESS, you should NOT store highly confidential information like passwords, credit card numbers, or bank access information. You should also keep a personal backup copy of your web site pages and any other important files

Access to your account

There are several ways that you can access your account from another computer connected to the Internet. These include SSH/Telnet, FTP, and the Web. A description of each of these Internet tools is contained in more detail in the Using Your Account page. The PuTTY page contains detailed description on how to access your account with PuTTY a secure SSH/Telnet access client.
An overview of all of the the different Internet client tools and their features is also included in the the I-net Class web pages http://www.policy.hu/inetclass/.
