LECTURE 4

Analyzing regional economies and social processes

Drawing from the results of research projects conducted in the past years in the Hungarian-Romanian-Ukrainian and Hungarian-Romanian-Serbian border regions, students discussed in small groups certain important economic and social trends which are taking place in the mentioned geographical areas, such as: the increasing social polarisation (partly the outcome of cross-border employment); the intensification of  migration in  the border areas; the new demographic situation emerging under the influence of  current  economic changes and of the migratory phenomena;  the transformation of legal and illegal segments of employment.  In discussing these issues, students from Romania and from Hungary expressed basically similar views, with one important exception: while discussing issues pertaining to cross border labour of Romanian citizens in Hungary, students from Hungary expressed a certain concern about the possibility that Romanian citizens looking for employment opportunities across the border might enter in competition with Hungarian citizens.
