Students were divided in two
groups. Members of the first group were asked to gather arguments in favor of
the nation state, while the second group argued in favor of globalization. The
outcome of the debate was a deeper understanding of the intrinsic link between
the structures of contemporary nation state and the current trends associated
with the globalization process. Instead
the initial underlining assumption of an opposition between nation state and
globalization, at the end of the debate
students were able to view the relation between the two concepts
complementarily, rather than in terms of contradiction. The main conclusion
drawn from the debate was that in order to be effective politically and
institutionally, globalization should be implemented taking into account the
national and cultural peculiarities of each nation state.
